For some background on the topic: DC launched "Rebirth" in June of 2016, altering numerous plot-lines that had been worked up for the years prior. "Rebirth" connects the DC Universe from before the Flashpoint story arc, released in 2011 as a special crossover with the world of DC, with the events of the "New 52" plot-line, which ran from 2011, after Flashpoint, till 2016, when "Rebirth" began.
(Flashpoint cover #1) ("Rebirth" cover #1) ("New 52" Cover #1)
"Rebirth" begins with a one-shot, featuring many characters, but focused on Wally West (Kid Flash) trying to reenter the timeline. No one can remember him, yet he attempts to reach Batman, Flash, his girlfriend from the previous timelines, and many others. The volume ends with a major twist: Batman discovers a shirt pin. This pin is familiar to any fan who reads another series, or who watched the movie:
After the chapter ends, an epilogue, featuring a watch being disassembled, and two separate speech bubbles with no visible characters. The voices belonging to Adrian Veidt and Dr. Manhattan, of Watchmen fame. So the DC Universe has merged with Watchmen, and the reveal is that they are behind many of the Multiversal events affecting all of the characters.
So concludes a summary of Volume One, of "DC Rebirth", as well as an introduction to this blog, and what shall be addressed. Tune in next time for a list of the top first issues of the series, and what to follow for the overarching story line.

I've never gotten too into comic books, but the niche and fascination that people have with them is interesting. I like how you described D.C. Rebirth in a way everyone can understand.
ReplyDeleteI, like Vincent, have never really gotten into the comic book scene but I do love the artistry of the whole thing. I liked the way you made this understandable and look forward to your forthcoming posts. Who knows, I may become a fan!
ReplyDeleteI, as the people commenting before me, have never really gotten into comics, I have given them a try and never could get hooked. Although your post is very interesting and Id love to read more, I can still get the gist of it all even though I don't have the commitment too read full comics. Look forward to reading more.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a common theme here that not many people have read comics, well I'm no different but I love movies and shows and games based from comic books and Manga. I'm more than familiar with most comic books and characters, but out of pure laziness though I've never really sat down to read a whole comic series unfortunately. Watchmen is a series I'm familiar with so I'm really excited that they have merged with the D.C. Universe! Great read here and I look forward to future posts!
ReplyDeleteI used to read DC Comics waaaay back in the day (like in the 90s/early 2000s) and I kind of stopped reading midway through the New 52 saga...I was mainly a Superman and Batman fan growing up and I did not like what DC had done with Superman in the New 52 storyline by having him not be with Lois anymore among other things. I have heard lately though that they have brought back the pre-Flashpoint Superman so I am kind of interested in catching up so I can read Rebirth. I only wish that DC had some kind of web service where you could read older comics for a monthly fee like Marvel does with Marvel Unlimited. I subscribe to Marvel Unlimited and I've been catching up with their storylines. I am kinda far behind though, I still haven't started Secret Wars. I am more Marvel these days, but if DC were to have an app like MU, I would jump on reading in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteI write this as I stand in front of the DC Section of the comic book store I work at. As a comic book store employee, I enjoy hearing other peoples takes on stories because everyone reads them a different way. I am wondering where you plan to go with this? Like what characters are you planning to follow, are you only going to do the main events? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DARK NIGHTS METAL, sorry, I got ahead of myself. I am very interested to see where this goes.
ReplyDeleteOh, I really want to read that!! (The Dark Nights Metal)...but money!! Haha!! I really just plan to follow the stories I feel are most interesting...so mainly Green Lantern, Justice League (both of them), Flash, Blue Beetle, Batman (as much as I can), and anything I can add on top of that. I shall be doing any main events I can though...I am really into the Watchmen, so I hope that plot-line is seen throughout numerous comics...
DeleteIf you ever want to borrow anything hit me up.
DeleteI have always been more of a marvel fan myself with the Runaways being my favorite comic. But Supergirl and Wonder Woman will always hold places of pride in my heart.
